Oompa Loompa Doopidy Doo!

What a fabulous World Book Day we had on Thursday! As always, it was great to see the children all dressed up. Such an array of costumes and imagination across the year group, well done everyone! To start off World Book Day, the children were lucky enough to have a dance workshop which was focused around the theme of the day, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. When the children twirled and whirled back into the classroom, they loved the imaginative task of designing their own bar of chocolate or sweets. They were able to bring their design to life in the afternoon. Firstly, they used craft materials to make their sweet treat and then they advertised it to their friends! It was almost like our own version of The Apprentice…!
On Tuesday, it was one of my favourite days of the year… PANCAKE DAY! My housemate and I had a go at making pancakes and, although the first one resembled scrambled egg, the final few turned out pretty good and I even managed to flip one! Nothing better than a lemon and sugar pancake mmm…
A huge thank you to our marvellous TAFF team. They did a great job of organising a sponsored pancake toss in the playground! The children LOVED it! It was so lovely to see them being so supportive and cheering each other on. Not only was this great fun, the event raised a huge amount of money for the school too. We wanted to say a huge thank you for your generosity
Believe it or not, we have also been doing some learning this week too… In English, we have been learning and practising the skills we will be needing for making our waterfall booklets for our big write next week. This week, we were focussing on using capital letters correctly for planet. We also introduced using possessive apostrophes and contractions. These are tricky skills to master but the children worked incredibly hard and they can’t wait to begin to create their own booklets about the solar system. They will look amazing!
In maths, we have been learning fractions, finding ½ and ¼ of shapes and numbers and recognizing that 2/4 is the same as ½. Next week we will be continuing this by moving onto ¾ and 1/3. Fractions are great fun to teach and the children have been very enthusiastic too.
Please look out for the changes to Google Classroom homework next week. A letter has will be posted explaining about the changes and we will be testing the children on times tables for the next few weeks. Please see GC for further details and please ask if you are unsure about anything. Times tables will be tested every Monday.
Next week is British Science Week, which we are all very much looking forward to, so white coats at the ready. Our learning will be focused on materials and their uses. We are lucky to have a lovely Mole mummy coming in to share her enthusiasm for the subject at the start of the week. How exciting!
We also have a very special visitor coming to school on Tuesday to show her incredible sporting talent. What a lot to look forward to next week!
That’s all for this week. I will leave you with this quote from Roald Dahl.

Have a weekend full of smiles,
Miss Heafford and the Year 2 team x
