It’s beginning to look a lot like spring…

I hope you read the title of the blog in the voice of Michael Buble, just like I did writing it! Blossom is coming, thick and fast and the daffodils are out in force. I do love spring and the lighter days, although I don’t like the itchy eyes and sneezing!

What a great week we have had in school. We began the week with an exciting visit from the athlete, Kirsty Way.

Our jaws hit the floor when we saw her trampolining skills and her handfuls of amazing medals! She is incredibly talented and the children were buzzing with excitement. Not only was this great fun, the event raised a huge amount of money for the school too. We wanted to say a huge thank you for your generosity😊 In the afternoon, each class were lucky to have a fun fitness session with Kirsty which ended with the children in a heap on the floor of exhaustion! I think I’ll stick to Zumba…

This week is British Science Week. The theme for the week is ‘Change and Adapt’ and the children were lucky to have a visit from a real life scientist. She got us all thinking about the changes that happen all around us and we all really enjoyed hearing about the accidental inventions. What a lot of wonderful visitors we’ve had this week! We have begun to look at materials in our science learning. Over the weekend, can you find a range of objects at home, name the material they are made of and list the properties of them?

In English, we have been continuing to practise the skills we will be needing for making our waterfall booklets in the next couple of weeks. This week, we were focussing on using ordinal numbers for the planets in the solar system. We also continued to practise using possessive apostrophes and contractions. Year 2 are so exciting to put their hard work in their waterfall booklets for a non-chron report – they will look out of this world!

In maths this week, we have been finishing off our unit on fractions – working out 3/4s and 1/3 of a shape, a number and an amount. The children have really got to grip with fractions and it is lovely to see them getting excited about their learning.

The children will have their first times tables test on Monday. Please remember that the test questions will be given in random order so please when you are practising at home, don’t just learn them by rote. Times tables doesn’t mean anything to the children when learnt like this – they need to understand that 5 x 2 actually means 5 lots of 2 – instead of being able to recite parrot fashion without understanding what they are saying. Please look at Google Classroom for more information about this.

I can’t believe we only have three weeks left before the Easter holidays! We’ll be munching on easter eggs before we know it!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Miss Heafford and the Year 2 team x
