It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

The children started the week with a visit from Santa whilst taking part in the reindeer run to help raise money for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice. A huge thank you to Fleet Lions for participating in this activity! And thank you all for your kind and generous donations. The children ended the week with a visit to Elfridges – thank you to our wonderful TAFF for organising such a well oiled event!

Thank you for your patience this week with dropping off and picking up via Dormouse Nest. It has been a bit of a strange week! The new flooring is due to go down this weekend and the Year 1 area should be re-opened as normal from Monday. If there is any delay, we will let you know.

Next week, Christmas will be in full flow. We have our annual trip to the Pantomime on Tuesday which the children will absolutely love! They even enjoy the walk to and from the Harlington Centre. Throughout the week, we will be learning about the Christmas story and all about Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. We will also be busy making Christmas cards, calendars, as well as lots of other fun crafts. I am sure we will have time for some Christmas party games in there somewhere! The children are very ready for a break from school and will welcome the rest with open arms!

This week in maths, we have been looking at measurement. We have been using language to compare measurements such as taller and shorter, longer and shorter and we even had a go at measuring using non-standard units. In English, we have finished reading The Grumpy Badger by writing an invitation to all the woodland animals, inviting them to come for Christmas. We also indulged in lots of fun science lessons including naming materials, looking at the properties of materials, investigating the strengths and uses of each material and making predictions. The children made mini parachutes using a material of their choice to see which materials work best and why.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday for Hedgehogs and Tuesday for Bumblebees.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library book change will be on a Friday.

Dates:

  • 17th December – Year 1 Pantomime Trip
  • 20th December – Last Day of Term
  • 6th January – Inset Day
  • 7th January – Back to School

We like to think of ourselves as a friendly and approachable team and if there is anything you have concerns about, please let us know and we will do our best to help.

Have a lovely weekend and see you next week!

Mrs Ford and the Year 1 team.
