Is it STILL January?
I actually can’t believe today is the last day of January… it feels like we should be in at least March by now! Roll on the lovely Spring weather! Thank you to all our lovely parents who attended parents evening this week and we hope you found them useful. It’s really nice to have a chat about your child’s progress and for you to hear how they are getting on at school as it’s hard to get a full picture from the children! But they are all smashing it and we are so proud of them all. Poor Mrs Firth was feeling rather under the weather this week so the rest of Bumblebee Class meetings will take place next week. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
In maths this week, we have been learning about fractions! We have been busy finding a fraction of a shape, a number and then a quantity. We will start off with ½ then move onto ¼. The children enjoyed learning something so different and found it an exciting challenge. Next week, we are going to be looking at addition. We will remind the children what it means to add and look at the symbols in a number sentence. We will move onto using a numberline to add two numbers together and write the matching number sentences. E.g. 5+4=9, 4+5=9, 9=5+4 and 9+4+5.
In English this week, we have been learning about question sentences. We started with learning the question words “what, why, where, how and who” and we practised asking and writing questions with a question mark. We then finished the week with writing an email to our dinosaurs to thank them for coming to school last week and we included lots of questions such as “did you have fun when you came to my school?”, “will you come again?” and “what was your favourite activity?”. Next week, we will be learning about what a diary is. We will remind the children of how Samuel Pepys kept a diary during the plague and Great Fire of London. The children will then have a go at writing their own diary entry recapping their dinosaur in school day.
Just a few reminders:
- Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
- Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
- Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday for Hedgehogs and Tuesday for Bumblebees.
- Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
- Library book change will be on a Friday.
