E-Safety and SCARF Day

We’ve had a busy week here in year 1! The children enjoyed a wonderful e-safety workshop from OpenView Education on Thursday. It was all about how to keep safe online when using lots of different devices. The children were introduced to a variety of characters who talked about different aspects of keeping safe such as not talking to strangers, sending kind messages to our friends, asking a trusted adult if not sure on something and of course keeping all personal information safe. We finished the week with wearing a scarf to school in support of mental health.

In maths this week, we have been busy looking at addition. We reminded ourselves what it means to add and looked at the + and = symbols in a number sentence. We moved onto using a numberline to add two numbers together and we wrote the matching number sentences. Next week, we will be busy looking at subtraction. We will remind ourselves what it means to subtract and we will look at the – and = symbols in a number sentence. We will move onto using a numberline to subtract a smaller number from a bigger number and write the matching number sentences.

In English this week, we learnt about exclamation sentences. We looked at what an exclamation mark is why it is used at the end of some sentences. We finished the week by writing a birthday card to our dinosaurs which included question and exclamation sentences. Next week, we will be learning about what a diary is. We will remind the children of how Samuel Pepys kept a diary during the plague and Great Fire of London. We will then be using our new knowledge from the past few weeks to write a postcard to our dinosaur telling them about our trip to Lyme Regis. We will include exclamation and question sentences in our postcard and answering the following questions: Where did you go? What did you do? Why did you visit there?

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday for Hedgehogs and Tuesday for Bumblebees.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library book change will be on a Friday.
