Almost at the end of November…

Isn’t time moving so fast?! We’ve had another fun week here in Year 1 at Tavistock! As you probably already know, we have our Christmas plays coming up very soon! The children are super excited and have been busy learning all the songs in school this week. You will have received a slip at some point with your child’s costume for the performance. Please do not go spending lots of money on costumes, use bits you’ve already got at home such as a tea towel for a shepherds head! We look forward to seeing you on the day of the performance (dates listed below). Please could we have all costumes in school by Wednesday 27th November.

In maths this week, we have continued our learning of teen numbers. We have been learning to recognise a teen number as 10 and how many more by recognising the place value of each digit. We have been reading, writing and representing teen numbers in a variety of different ways. We used numicon and money to represent the teen number and start to represent the numbers in a more abstract way. At the end of week, we carried out an assessment to see how much we can remember from the last two weeks and the children all did incredibly well! Next week, we will be learning about subtraction and learning about the concept of taking away. We will start the week with using practical resources to take away and we will focus on the language involved when taking away. We will then move on to exploring pictures and representations that show taking away, and write expressions and equations to match these.

In English, we have had our final week reading the popular book ‘The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Book’ by Lucy Rowland. We have spent this week looking at letter writing. For the first session, we looked at the features of letter writing such as the layout and the language used. We then practised writing some persuasive sentences to persuade our mummy and daddy about the importance of reading to us properly. We then finished the week with writing a letter to our mummy and daddy remembering full stops, capital letters, finger spaces, using ‘and’ to extend’ and of course the persuasive language. The outcome was brilliant and the children were extremely proud of what they had achieved. Next week, we will be reading the book called ‘Grumpy Badger’s Christmas’ by Paul Bright and Jane Chapman. We will read part of the book in the first lesson and then have a go at predicting what we think might happen next using sentences such as “I think_____because_____”. In the next lesson, we will then read the rest of the book and have a go at sequencing the main evens using pictures from the story. Later in the week, we will then move onto looking at what an invitation is and answer questions such as What is an invitation? Why are we going to be writing an invitation? What is the purpose? What type of information is included?

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday for Hedgehogs and Tuesday for Bumblebees.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library book change will be on a Friday.
