Welcome Back!
I hope you all had a lovely and restful half term. The children have come back bright eyed and bushy tailed ready for the busy build up to Christmas. Despite some of the children being hit with the sickness bug this week, we’ve had a fun and busy start to the term.
Next week, we will be discussing Remembrance Day –
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”
We had a class assembly on Thursday to discuss with the children about Remembrance Day as lots of people are wearing poppies this time of year. We spoke about why we wear poppies and what they represent, the significance of the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month and why and what we do during the two-minute silence. On Monday, the children will take part in the two-minute silence at 11am.
In English this week, we have been reading the book “The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Book” written by Lucy Rowland. We’ve enjoyed learning new and exciting words to help build our vocabulary. We have been writing sentences using the connectives “and” and “because” to extend our writing. Next week, we will be continuing with the same book. We will start the week with building sentences with cubes to represent each word, lolly sticks to represent the finger spaces and little cards with the word ‘and’ written on them to extend the sentence. The children will have a go at building and saying their sentences over and over with so they know it off by heart. Next, we will then look at adjectives to describe the wolf and discuss which words are most relevant. The children will learn that by adding these adjectives into their sentences, it will make their writing more exciting. We will then finish the week by writing the sentences in full when the children will round up everything they have learnt from the week. They will be very proud of their final piece of writing.
In maths, we have been looking at a variety of 2D shapes and we’ve been discussing the different properties of each one. We have been making comparisons about different 2D shapes by looking at their properties. Then, we used the 2D shapes and irregular shapes to create a picture. After that, we learnt about 3D shapes and their properties. We went on a 3D shape hunt to see which ones we could see around our classrooms. The children have really impressed us with their knowledge of shape this year! Next week, we are moving onto teen numbers. We will have a go at recognising the numbers 11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19. We will then have a go at building each of the teen numbers using dienes and numicon. We will spend time talking about teen numbers and fill in the stem sentences ‘__ is made up of 1 ten and __ left over’.
Just a few reminders:
- Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
- Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
- Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday for Hedgehogs and Tuesday for Bumblebees.
- Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
- Library book change will be on a Friday.
