Happy Half Term!

What a fun week to end on! The children had a fantastic Great Fire of London workshop on Wednesday. They absolutely loved it! First of all, we learnt that the Great Fire of London took place the year after the Great Plague. We then learnt about the sequence of events that took place during the Great Fire of London. We indulged in some drama activities to re-enact the fire and to sequence the events, and we thought about the differences in people’s lives and what firefighting was like in the past. After that, we explored why the fire was so devastating because of differences in housing and firefighting in 1666. The children participated in discussions and thought about how people must have felt experiencing those events. They were absolutely buzzing by the end of the workshop!

Thank you to everyone for attending the Parents Evenings this week, we hope you found them useful! It’s always nice to have a chat about how the children are doing, how they are progressing and what they are up to! We as teachers, also love having that 1 on 1 time with you as the drop offs and pick-ups can be a bit chaotic at times!

In English, we have continued our learning about fairy tales and focussed on the loveable story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. We have sequenced the events of the story in the correct order and then we wrote sentences to retell the story using time connectives. After the break, we will then be reading the book “The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Book” written by Lucy Rowland. We will look at fun new and exciting words to help build our vocabulary. We will be writing sentences using the connectives “and” and “because” to extend our writing.

In maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of part, part, whole of the number 10. We have been using the more than, less than and equals signs to compare the numbers which we have introduced to the children this week. After half term, we will be look at a variety of 2D shapes and discuss the different properties of each one. We will make comparisons about different 2D shapes by looking at their properties. Then, we will use 2D shapes and irregular shapes to create a picture. After that, we will learn about 3D shapes and their properties. We will create our own 3D compound shapes using all we have learnt.

Just a few reminders:

  • Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
  • Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
  • Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday for Hedgehogs and Tuesday for Bumblebees.
  • Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
  • Library book change will be on a Friday.
