Coughs and Sneezes
We are getting to that time of year where most people are developing a cough or sniffle of some sort. Some children had their nasal flu spray on Wednesday which I know they were really brave about. My only advice for this time of year is to keep taking your vitamins and wash your hands regularly. Common colds are hard to avoid, especially when children are involved! Just a quick reminder to order any school photos or TAFF Christmas cards by the end of the month to avoid disappointment. Also, parents evening appointments are next week.
This week in English, we have been focussing on the book ‘Each Peach Pear Plum’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. We have been exploring the nursery rhymes and fairy tales found in the book to help us identify and label the characters. We have also been using prepositions to describe where the characters are hiding. Next week, we will be focussing on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will be learning actions to help retell the story before sequencing the main events and then having a go at writing the story in full sentences. We will be recapping capital letters, full stops and finger spaces to help make our writing fabulous.
This week in maths, we have been focussing on the number 10. We have been using objects to split 10 into 2 parts using numicon. The children were given some challenges such as “There are 10 animals and they need sorting into two pens. There must always be at least 1 animal in each pen. How many different ways can they be sorted?” We encouraged the children to work systematically and show their working out. We had great fun! Next week, we will be consolidating our knowledge of part, part, whole of the number 10. We will also be using the more than, less than and equals signs to compare the numbers which we have introduced to the children this week.
Just a few reminders:
- Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
- Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
- Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday for Hedgehogs and Tuesday for Bumblebees.
- Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
- Library book change will be on a Friday.
