Harvest Festival
What another great week! On Wednesday, we enjoyed celebrating Harvest with our wonderful Harvest assembly. Thank you all so much for your generous donations, they always mean such a lot and of course they are donated to a worthy cause – The Lions Community Store. Our school hall was full of donations and the charity were extremely grateful so thank you again!
This week in English, we have been learning all about CAPITAL LETTERS. We used the book ‘Animalphabet‘ by Julia Donaldson to learn about the alphabet. We talked about how and when to use capital letters and lower case letters in our writing and had a go at identifying them. We also started to learn about alphabetical order and we carried on using adjectives in our sentences which we are getting really good at. Next week, we will be having a skills week. This means we will be practising everything we are have already learnt and putting it into action. We will be continuing to learn how to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces correctly to write sentences.
This week in maths, we have been focusing on the number 8. We looked at different ways to make the number 8 and discussed how the number can be split into different parts. For example 4 and 4, 3 and 5, 1 and 7 etc. we showed different ways to record this such as cherry diagrams, tens frames and we also used coins to make the amount. Next week, we will be focussing on the number 9. We will again be using coins to show different combinations of how to make 9p. We will also be using objects to split 9 into 2 parts and introducing a new method called a bar model. This is hard to explain but it’s a great pictorial representation of a number where bars are used to represent the different quantities. This helps the children visually see the whole number at the top and the two parts below. If you’re not sure what I mean, please ask your class teacher for some clarity.
Just a few reminders:
- Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
- Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
- Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday for Hedgehogs and Tuesday for Bumblebees.
- Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
- Library book change will be every Friday.
