Rain Rain GO AWAY
Why oh why does it always rain at playtime, lunchtime and school pick up? I’m convinced the weather gods are having a good old laugh at us somewhere! Then the sun miraculously appears for the rest of the day! I can’t believe we have been back for 4 weeks already – time certainly flies when you’re having fun! The children are very settled in their new classrooms now and we have absolutely loved getting to know them. Each child is unique with their own amazing personality and we are privileged to be part of their learning journey.
This week in English, we have focussed on the books ‘Oi Dog! and Oi Cat!’ by Kes Gray and Jim Field. We have continued to learn about what rhyming words are and we have been busy identifying these in the different books. We created a list of rhyming couplets, a mind map of rhyming words and wrote some lovely rhyming sentences. Next week, we will be learning all about CAPITAL LETTERS. We will be using the book ‘Animalphabet‘ by Julia Donaldson to learn about the alphabet. We will be learning about how and when to use capital letters and lower case letters. We will also be starting to learn about alphabetical order and carry on using adjectives in our sentences.
This week in maths, we have been learning about the number 7. We looked at what the number 7 looks like and different representations of 7. We used practical resources to show 7 and in our books and we drew 7 in different ways. After this, we used practical resources to create number stories to explain how 7 can be split into different parts. We also drew a number story in our maths book. Finally, we used a tens frame to show 7 as part, part whole. Next week in maths, we will be focusing on the number 8. We will look at different ways to make the number 8, discussing how the number can be split into different parts. For example 4 and 4, 3 and 5, 1 and 7 etc. and show different ways to record this such as cherry diagrams, tens frames and using coins to make the amount.
Just a few reminders:
- Please make sure all your child’s belongings are labelled. Things do go missing and I’m convinced there is a black hole somewhere in the school that sucks them in and they never come back.
- Please send your child’s water bottle and book bag into school every day.
- Our Year 1 PE day is on a Monday for Hedgehogs and Tuesday for Bumblebees.
- Reading books in school are changed once a week and this will be every Monday. The books will be collected in in the morning and a new one will be issued that same afternoon.
- We will pick up library book change again in the next few weeks. This will be on a Friday.
