How is it almost June?!

Happy half term! A huge well done to the children for having another wonderful half term. We are going into the final half term before they all go onto their next adventure… I might get my tissues at the ready!

We started off the week with our final tennis session. A big thank you to Jamie for being a fab tennis coach and teaching the children lots of different skills. I wonder if you can remember what backhand and forehand is…

In maths, we have been learning an efficient strategy to add and subtract 2-digit numbers. This strategy involves partitioning the numbers, adding/subtracting the tens first, then the ones and combining the totals.

For example,

47 + 21 = 68

40 + 20 = 60

7 + 1 = 8

60 + 8 = 68

Later on in the week, we used this strategy when halving and doubling different amounts. The children noticed the relationship between halving and doubling too.

This week, Year 2 haven’t had English lessons. Instead, we have had a lovely mix of geography and art. The children have been learning all about maps and they have been creating their own map of the school playground. We explored the use of symbols and grid references. In art, the children have been learning the skill of tracing and they have started to create their own wire flower structure. It was very fiddly but the children showed brilliant perseverance!

Please keep reading with your child at home. Half term would be a lovely chance to visit Fleet Library. I wonder how many children can get their diamond certificate (and pencil!) by the end of Year 2!

Things to remember for the first week back:

  • Swimming starts the first week back. You will need a sensible bag, a swimming costume and a towel. No suncream please (due to allergies).
  • Times tables will continued to be mixed 2s, 5s and 10s. Please keep practising these in different orders. Remember 2 x 5 just means 2 lots/groups of 5.
  • Book change on Monday – please make sure reading log and books are in bag.
  • Spelling tests on Monday
  • It is getting warmer – water bottles in every day please!

You have all worked incredibly hard this half term. Enjoy a well-earned break. Have lots of fun, lots of rest and keep safe.

Wishing you all the best half term and see you in June!
